The voyage took place from December 1831 to October 1836. Voyage of the HMS Beagleĭarwin spent almost five years aboard a Royal Navy exploring ship, the HMS Beagle. On August 4, Darwin traveled with Sedgwick to spend two weeks mapping strata in Wales. In preparation, he joined Adam Sedgwick's geology course. He planned to visit Tenerife with some classmates after graduation to study natural history in the tropics. Darwin had to stay at Cambridge until June of 1831. Charles was to study for a Bachelor of Arts degree as the first step toward becoming an Anglican country parson. He learned taxidermy in about 40 daily hour-long sessions from John Edmonstone, a freed black slave who had accompanied Charles Waterton in the South American rainforest.ĭarwin's father thought he did not pay enough attention to his medical studies, so he sent Charles to Christ's College, Cambridge. He did not enjoy medical school, so he neglected his studies. Darwin spent the summer of 1825 as a doctor's apprentice, helping his father treat the poor of Shropshire, before going to the University of Edinburgh Medical School (at the time the best medical school in the U.K.) with his brother Erasmus in October of 1825.
